I am profoundly honored to announce the publication of a 12-poem author feature of my work in the venerable literary magazine, ucity review, in Issue 30, their 15th anniversary issue.

It is a privilege for me to be one of only twelve writers selected by a magazine whose 15 years of publishing have presented inventive and respected writers like Martha Silano, Theresa Senato Edwards, Chelsea Dingman, Han VanderHart, Juliana Gray, Todd Dillard, Sandra Marchetti, Amorak Huey, Sally Van Doren, Eric Pankey, Adrian Matejka, Jennifer Wong, and John Sibley Williams to an increasingly diverse readership.

As a poet who must struggle against obscurity, I am always honored and thrilled when my poems appear publicly. Some publications, however, merit special mention.

As with the selection by Richie Hofmann of my poem, “Demarcation” as Runner-Up in The Sewanee Review’s Fifth Annual Poetry Contest in 2022, the ucity review publication is of notable significance; it marks the first appearance in print of poems written under the mentorship of two other irreplaceable poets.

My poem, “Need,” was workshopped with the late Jack Gilbert, whom I had the incalculable good fortune to meet in 1994 as a founding member of CT’s Brick Walk Poets Collective, and who strongly encouraged me to publish it. “Need” was consistently rejected for 30 years prior to its acceptance by ucity review.

My poems “Mining,” “Saint Geneviève,” and “Portable Missionaries” were revised in a series of private conversations I had the rare privilege to initiate with the late Stanley Kunitz between 2002 and 2004 in New York City, after the poems were scathingly dismissed by several of my instructors in the Sarah Lawrence College MFA program. These poems were consistently rejected for 20 years before the ucity review acceptance.

The 12 poems in my author feature are included in my full-length poetry manuscript, which is on its eighth year of submission for publication, and has been rejected by 130 presses so far. I remain, however, undaunted in my search for a home for this collection.

It is my abiding wish that something in one or more of the poems in my author feature will find resonance with you.
